Rasmus Højlund scores again to send Napoli to top of Serie A

Napoli returned to winning ways in Serie A by coming from behind to beat struggling Genoa 2-1 and returning to the top of the league table.

Patrick Vieira’s side are yet to claim a victory in the league this season but they took the lead in the 33rd minute through teenager Jeff Ekhator.

However, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa levelled the scores in the 57th minute and Rasmus Højlund netted the fourth goal of his loan spell from Manchester United with a 75th-minute winner.

Napoli’s perfect start to the defence of their title ended last weekend with defeat by AC Milan but they bounced back from that blow by beating Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.

Antonio Conte chose to rest Kevin De Bruyne for this encounter, with David Neres starting instead.

The hosts began well and Højlund almost forced an opener in the seventh minute when Alessandro Marcandalli’s attempted clearance nearly ended up in his own net.

Matteo Politano then missed a very good chance when Neres sprinted away down the left and sent in a cross that evaded Scott McTominay and Højlund and was sent high over the bar by the winger.

Having failed to take advantage, Napoli found themselves on the back foot and 18-year-old Ekhator produced a moment of class to put Genoa ahead.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy got away down the right and pulled the ball back for Ekhator, who backheeled it into the bottom corner.

Napoli were dealt another blow just before half-time when Stanislav Lobotka was forced off through injury and replaced by Billy Gilmour.

The afternoon became even costlier after the break with Politano also unable to continue.

Conte sent on De Bruyne and shortly afterwards Napoli found the goal they had been looking for.

Leonardo Spinazzola sent in a cross from the left, Højlund challenged for it and Anguissa came in from the right to head the ball into the net.

Suddenly it was all Napoli and Nicola Leali prevented the visitors scoring a second with a save from Giovanni Di Lorenzo after he had been teed up by Neres, while Højlund had the ball in the net but was flagged offside.

Di Lorenzo then hit the post from a De Bruyne corner before the visitors finally grabbed the second.

Højlund had been a danger all evening and he was in the right place to tuck away the winner after Spinazzola and McTominay had set up Anguissa for a shot that Leali could only parry to the in-form Dane.
